At number nine on the list of the largest defence companies in the world is L-3 Communications.

The company is a provider of C3ISR systems, avionics, training devices and services, instrumentation, space, and navigation products based in Murray Hill, New York. L-3 Communications was spun out of Lockheed Martin following its merger with Martin Marietta in 1996; the ten units making up L-3 were unwanted by Lockheed at the time and did not form part of the merger. L-3 is named after Frank Lanza, Robert LaPenta, and Lehman Brothers.

The defence contractor now has four main operating units: Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C3ISR); Government Services; Aircraft Modernisation and Maintenance (AM&M); and Specialised Products, sensors, avionics, simulation, displays and antenna products.
