Squadron Leader Darren Gillan

Officer Commanding 71 (Inspection & Repair) Squadron Support Force RAF

Darren is an Aero Systems Engineer who has served in multiple 1st line roles, explosive safety appointments, the Combat Air Force HQ and has held delegated airworthiness authority for 2 aircraft types. Darren joined the RAF in 1996 as an Avionics Mechanic. His first assignment on Tornados saw him supporting operations in Iraq and Kosovo before being assigned to the Red Arrows. He was then promoted to Corporal in 2004 and posted to work on Harriers. It was at this time that he applied for a commission in the Engineer Branch. Serving on 93 (EA) Squadron, Darren supported operations against Libya and most notably in Afghanistan. before being assigned to Puma helicopters. Another move followed this time to the Falkland Islands before becoming the Sentry Propulsion Manager. After promotion to Squadron Leader in Jul 17, Darren assumed the mantle of Avionics Engineering Authority on Rivet Joint. After 3 years, he took command of the Typhoon ILOC within the Combat Air Force Head Quarters and remained there for 3 years. In Sep 23, Darren began his studies in advanced aircraft design at Cranfield University before taking command of the RAF’s inspection and repair specialists, 71(IR) Sqn at RAF Wittering. Darren is married to Lynsey (a former swimming instructor) and has 3 children, Jack (18), Harry (14) and Ione (12). He enjoys reading Science Fiction novels, playing Cities Skylines and watching NFL – Go Cowboys!.
