Major General Øyvind Johan Kvalvik (NOR A) started his military career in the Norwegian Army in 1988. His service includes a variety of combat, command and staff positions at all levels of the Norwegian Armed Forces. He started off as an infantry officer, served as mechanized unit commander, company commander in His Majesty the Kings Guards Battalion and as battalion commander of Ranger Battalion. He served as the Military Advisor to the Chief of Defence, as the chief of the plans and procurement division in the Army staff, as section head of National security policy, as head of Structural development in the Department for Defence Policy and Long Term Planning, Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defence, and then as chief of Land Systems Division prior to his current position as Deputy Director General Norwegian Defence Material Agency. His service also includes deployment as part of UNPROFOR, UNPREDEP, KFOR, ISAF and serving in NATO staff. He was promoted Major General in June 2022 when he assumed his current position.
Major General Kvalvik has studied at the Norwegian Military Academy, the Norwegian National Staff College and the United States Army War College. He holds a Master of Military Science degree and a Master of Strategic Studies degree from US Army War College. His medals include the Norwegian Defence Medal, The Norwegian Defence Medal for International operations, as well as different UN and NATO non-article 5 operational medals for the operations in which he has served.
Major General Kvalvik is married to Hege and has three boys (Øystein 1998, Kristian 2003 and Magnus 2004).
