Gary Ivany embarked on his career with the Canadian Coast Guard in 1993. He graduated from the Canadian Coast Guard College in 1997 as a Marine Engineer, having earned a Bachelor of Technology in Marine Engineering and subsequently obtained his First Class Chief Engineer’s certificate. For over ten years, Gary served aboard various Coast Guard vessels sailing on all three Canadian coasts, working in positions progressively up to Chief Engineer. In 2008, he relocated to the National Capital Region, where he worked in multiple operational and technical roles, eventually becoming the Director, Marine Engineering, overseeing the National Vessel Maintenance Program.
In 2016, Gary accepted the position of Senior Director leading Coast Guard’s implementation of the Oceans Protection Plan. He later became the Senior Director of Operational Support before taking on the role of Assistant Commissioner for the Central and Arctic Region in 2018. In 2019, Gary was appointed Assistant Commissioner to Canadian Coast Guard’s Atlantic Region. Drawing on his extensive operational experience in marine engineering and programs and policy development, Assistant Commissioner Ivany continues to provide valuable leadership while overseeing all Atlantic Coast Guard activities, including the provision of programs and services to the marine community and Canadians in the four Atlantic provinces and adjacent waters.
