Educated in Sydney, Rear Admiral Murray joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 1986. A graduate of the first Australian Defence Force Academy class, he went on to serve at sea as a supply officer on board the hydrographic ship HMAS Flinders, and then as commissioning Deputy Supply Officer of the frigate HMAS Anzac and Supply Officer of the frigate HMAS Newcastle. During his time on board Newcastle, he deployed to the Northern Arabian Gulf enforcing UN sanctions against Iraq. Ashore he has served as the Integrated Logistics System Manager for Oberon Class submarines, graduated from the Army Command & Staff College at Fort Queenscliff, worked as the Fleet’s Human Resource Manager and undertook a two year posting with the Ministry of Defence, in the United Kingdom, focusing on supply chain improvement. In 2008, following promotion to Captain, he was appointed as the Director of Navy Logistics. In 2009 he joined Headquarters Joint Operations Command as the Director of Logistics Operations (J43). Following completion of the Defence and Strategic Studies Course in 2013 he was promoted Commodore and appointed as the Director General of Support (J1/J4) at Joint Operations Command. In 2017 he joined Joint Logistics Command as Director General Logistics Systems, and in 2018 he became Deputy Commander Joint Logistics and Director General Strategic Logistics. Rear Admiral Murray was appointed to his current role as Commander Joint Logistics (Strategic J4) and Head Defence Fuel Supply Chain on 28 June 2019.
