Dr Peter Homa CBE DBA

Peter is passionate about supporting staff provide great healthcare, teaching and research.

Peter has over forty years’ management experience including thirty as chief executive in three university teaching NHS Trusts and three national organisations. A track record of leading innovative, purposeful organisational change that simultaneously improves the quality of patient care, staff engagement, teaching, research and value for money. Peter’s first job in the NHS was as a Porter from which he gained more insight into management than any subsequent course he has attended.

Peter is Director General, Defence Medical Services, Ministry of Defence, responsible for excellent healthcare and occupational medicine to UK’s service personnel across the globe. He is the first civilian and non-medic to hold the position. Prior to this he was the inaugural Chair, NHS Leadership Academy and also independent Chair of the Partnership Board overseeing the major service and academic reconfiguration between Guy’s and St Thomas’; King’s College Hospital and Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS FT Trusts. This led to the merger of Guy’s and St Thomas’ and the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS FT Trusts.

Peter served as Nottingham University Hospital’s (NUH) chief executive from 2006 – 2017. During his tenure CQC rated NUH as “Good: overall and “Outstanding” for “Well Led”. NUH became the most research active teaching Trust outside of London, Oxford and Cambridge. He chaired the Association of UK University Hospitals Chief Executive forum between 2014/17.

Peter has a proven ability to establish high performing organisations through empowering leadership in the toughest environments. Skilled at operating in the most challenging areas of health services and at high levels in government.

Peter has a degree in economics and Master and Doctorate degrees in Business Administration. He has held Honorary Chairs at London School of Economics; Universities of Lincoln; Surrey and Nottingham Business School. He was awarded a CBE in 2000 for services to health care.

Married to Deborah, an accomplished leadership consultant. He has a son, Ben and daughter, Charlotte. In his spare time, Peter enjoys time with the family, cycling, cooking, photography, reading and writing.
