Colonel Giles Malec joined the Royal Artillery in Jan 1999. His early service was with AS90 regiments serving in Bosnia as Troop Commander, Iraq as a Forward Observation Officer, Cyprus as the BG Operations Officer and then as Battery Commander in Sangin, Afghanistan. On the staff he has completed two ISTAR tours; the first as the SO2 ISTAR in headquarters 1 Mechanised Brigade including a second Iraq tour. Following battery command he was posted to the Army Headquarters as the SO2 ISTAR Policy and Plans.
On promotion to Lt Col he attended staff college and then commanded 12 Regiment Royal Artillery (SHORAD) from January 2014 – Jun 16. He subsequently deployed on Op Inherent Resolve into the 2* Special Ops Joint Task Force HQ as the Deputy J3 and on return spent 7 months as the SO1 Military Strategy in the Army Directorate for Operations and Commitments.
On promotion to Colonel he commanded the Joint Ground Based Air Defence organisation / 7 Air Defence Group from Oct 2017 – Oct 20. He then became the Assistant Head of the Defence Operational Capability branch in the MOD, working direct to the Vice Chief of Defence. Following a year at the Royal College of Defence Studies he became the Army’s GBAD Programme Director in Summer 2023.
He is married and has three teenage children. He is a rugby and cricket enthusiast, is the sponsorship director for the Army Rugby Union, Chairman of Royal Artillery cricket and will happily try his hand at any ball sports.
