After high school and
military service, Rüdiger Schmitt studied at the University of Karlsruhe
electrical engineering. In 1992 he ended his doctorate with a thesis on optical
phase conjugation. Since then he works at the French-German Research Institute
of Saint-Louis.
His main field of research is
the study of interaction effects of laser radiation with matter. During his
activities, he has investigated, in addition to other things, the damage
behavior of optical materials, the development and spread of laser-induced
plasmas and the filamentation of ultrashort pulses. Currently the main focus of
his work lies in the field of thermal energy coupling into solids, especially
composites. This includes experimental works as well as analytical and
numerical modeling of the processes taking place.
He is also lecturer at the University of Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative
State University.
