Major General Sergio Alfredo Serrano Alvarez

Commandant Colombian Marine Corps

Major General Serrano began his military career in 1985, was commissioned as Marine Infantry Officer on December 1, 1988. Promoted to Brigadier General on 2016, he assumed as Commandant of the Colombian Marine Corps in January 2021.

With broad experience in Ground, Riverine and Counter-terrorist operations, he served along several military units throughout the Colombian geography, and occupied positions as the Counterintelligence Department Commander, Atlantic Naval Force; Chief of Intelligence Department, 2nd Riverine Marine Brigade; Marine Security Battalion Commander; Chief of Personnel Department at Marine Corps Headquarter; Commanding General, Marine Corps Training Base; 4 th Marine Brigade Commander, where lead counterinsurgency operations against drug-terrorist groups; Chief of Staff, Joint Stabilization Task Force “Hercules”, and Commander of the South Naval Force.

In the international background he went to the Weapons Orientation Course at Fort Benning in the United States, Riverine and Coastal Operations Course in Port Rodman, also participated in the 2009 Partnership of The Americas Planning Conference in United States, UNITAS GOLD MPC Planning Conference 2009 in Mayport-US; Operation Partnership of the Americas 2009 - "UNITAS GOLD" training in US. He was the Naval Attachee at the Colombian Embassy in Mexico. Additionally, General Serrano coursed senior Advanced Military Studies, and earned a Masters in Security and National Defense at the War College.

General Serrano has been awarded with National and internationals citations, medals and awards, some of most relevant are the "Boyacá Cross" Order, Distinguished Services in “Public Safety” Medal for fourth Time, Military Medal of Honor, Distinguished Services to the Colombian Marine Corps Medal, Naval Merit Order "Almirante Padilla”.
