Major Mein began his military service in 1988 with the Army Reserve, serving with the Calgary Highlanders in the Infantry. After serving for a brief time, Major Mein left the Army Reserve and pursued his civilian career. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Lethbridge Major Mein worked in historic sites and museums in Alberta Canada. In 2006 Major Mein returned to serve in the Army Reserve as an Officer in the Artillery. Serving in a variety of roles, Major Mein was a troop commander, for both light artillery systems and 81mm Mortars, a Forward Observation Officer, and Battery Captain. Major Mein would go on to serve as a Commanding Officer for the 20th Independent Field Battery. In 2021 Major Mein served with the Canadian Army Staff College as a standards officer, and in 2023 Major Mein became the project director of the Indirect Fires Modernization program, where he continues to serve today.
