Transforming Armour for Multi-Domain Warfare

Transforming Armour for Multi-Domain Warfare

This article sets the scene for the International Armoured Vehicles conference, and will help to stimulate thought and debate. It aims to strike a balance between examining some elements of history and design parameters, future prospects and ongoing development.

Ahead of International Armoured Vehicles 2022 read this report to examine some elements of armoured history, design parameters, future prospects and ongoing development in the field.

This report includes:

  • Review the origins of the development of Armour and summarises current conceptual thinking regarding Multi-Domain Warfare.
  • Considers the implications of Multi-Domain Warfare on the technological development of armoured vehicles, and vice versa.
  • The starting point will be UK doctrine and thinking, especially given the recent publication of the Integrated Review and the associated Ministry of Defence Command Paper, but it will also examine the activity and philosophy of key allies and potential adversaries.
  • Focus primarily on the main battle tank, since this is where the greatest technical challenges lie, and will aim to provide a brief audit of where things stand in terms of the traditional characteristics of Armour – Firepower, Protection and Mobility – while positing the need for a further core characteristic relating to Multi-Domain Warfare in the form of Connectivity.
