Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) is a UK-based defence engineering company specialising in the design, manufacture and support of military vehicles used by the British Army and international customers.
RBSL is a UK-based, joint venture business between Rheinmetall and BAE Systems. The company has a long-standing relationship with the British Army having designed and delivered many of the Army’s existing combat vehicles under different business names. RBSL continues to provide in-service support to these vehicles, as well as deliver some of the UK MOD’s latest land programmes.
In May 2021, RBSL was awarded an £800m contract to upgrade 148 British Army Challenger 2 Main Battle Tanks. The upgraded vehicle, to be called Challenger 3, will be a network-enabled, digital Main Battle Tank with state-of-the-art lethality, upgraded survivability, plus world-class surveillance and target acquisition capabilities.
RBSL is also one of two manufacturers delivering over 500 Boxer vehicles to the British Army. Through its £860m contract, RBSL will manufacture approximately half of the new fleet, undertaking the fabrication of the vehicle structures together with the assembly, integration, and test of the complete vehicles.
RBSL currently employs a highly-skilled workforce of more than 700 people, including over 300 engineers, located at its headquarters in Telford as well as at sites near Newcastle, Bristol, and Dorset. RBSL also employs a team of 40 apprentices, with plans to expand its early careers community over the coming years.
