Captain Alfonso Carrasco Santos

Head of Capabilities Development Spanish Navy

Captain Alfonso Carrasco graduated from the Spanish Naval Academy, as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1998; he was promoted to Captain in September 2024. He specialized in submarines and also graduated as a Staff Officer in 2012. Afloat, he served onboard ''Galerna'' class submarines and was executive officer of “Tramontana”. He culminated his submarine career with the privilege of commanding Submarine “Galerna”, after surviving the Submarine Commanding Officer Course (COURCO) in France. He also commanded “Formentor”, a fast patrol boat based in Cartagena; was executive officer twice, in Minehunter “Tajo” and Frigate “Numancia”. Finally he was Commanding Officer of the Fleet Combat Support Ship “Patiño” in December 2020. His shore duties have included the Cabinet of Chief of Defense Staff as military advisor, the War College as Strategic Division Chief and the Navy Staff, Logistic Division-submarine branch and Plans and Policy Division, his current post. Captain Carrasco speaks English and French. He has written several articles related to submarines in Spanish Navy Magazine. He enjoys sports and reading. He is married and has four children.
