Dr. Subrata Sanyal is on detail as the Measurement Standards Technical Advisor for Trusted AI and Autonomy at the Office of the Under-Secretary of Defense (Research & Engineering) [OUSD(R&E)]. As the METCAL Chief Scientist for Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division (NSWC Corona), he supports the US Navy Metrology & Calibration (METCAL) program, ensuring technology performance measurement assurance via metrology, calibration, and measurement standards. With 35+ years of RDT&E leadership expertise across academia, industry, and government, he drives collaborative metrology efforts to transition laboratory technologies to operational systems and develop STEM infrastructure. Dr. Sanyal promotes the role of measurement science and engineering within the Navy and DoD, establishing advanced S&T visions. As the Navy lead for the Advanced Technology Working Group (ATWG) of the DoD Joint Service METCAL Calibration Coordination Group, he spearheads critical and emerging technology areas including directed energy, AI, autonomy, photonics, chemical and biological sensors, 3D printing, etc. He has mentored 100+ individuals, including university students and technology experts, with many mentees joining the DoD workforce or earning DoD SMART scholarships. His research expertise spans laser optics, spectroscopy, electro-optics, nanotechnology, computer simulations, METCAL RDT&E for advanced weapon and sensor systems, additive manufacturing, and Intelligent Autonomous Systems. Dr. Sanyal holds a PhD in condensed matter physics from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, an MS in physics from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, and a BS in physics (honors) from the University of Calcutta. He has extensive research and technology management experience in academia and industry, with over 100 technical publications, 25 patents and published patent applications, and numerous awards, including the NAVSEA Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Warfare Center Award for Innovations.
