What does it take for a military service to build an all-new aviation capability from the ground up?
Major General Frank M. Muth, 21st Program Manager, FMS, Saudi Arabian National Guard, recently discussed just that at Defence IQ's annual International Military Helicopter event.
In this video presentation, Muth talks through the process and progress in building a brand new helicopter capability – from planning to execution. Based on the 1960s-era Hughes Model 369 (OH-6 Cayuse in US Army service), Boeing's AH-6i features an enhanced payload, avionics package and a Rolls-Royce 250-C30R/3M engine that develops a power output of 650shp. The engine is controlled by Full Authority Digital Electronic Controller (FADEC), enabling a maximum speed of 132kt, and is particularly well suited for operating in hot and high environments.
The contract for the 24 helicopters, first announced in 2013, was valued at $234 million.
